strands is an ongoing art series generated with a custom web app I built. The app’s adjustable parameters influence the direction, flow, dispersion, branching, and negative space of each composition, forming strands with a consistent width and no abrupt end within the canvas.
Compositions can be exported as images for post-processing, or printed as stencils ready for cutting with a plotter. Here are some, including a few transferred onto wood panels using spray paint and acrylics.

The app expands on a mural I did at home some time back. The strands on this one follow the same principles and constraints, all drawn by hand improvisationally using a tool I fashioned out of two pencils joined and spaced with a lego brick. Years later I felt I had enough time and knowledge to recreate the design process programmatically.
I’ve published paper-clipper that handles the logic for offsetting and smoothing the paths, and will share the source for the app some day soon.
